Sea of the Falling Sun Dev Blog #3

Last week we had gotten the main mechanics for the game completed so this week was mainly polishing the game as well as getting the score working.

I ended up working a bit more on the main menu along with Roman. I ended up making it so when player one is allocated the player one crosshair shows up on the bottom left of the menu screen and when player two is allocated then the player two crosshair shows up on the other side of the menu screen. Roman helped to get the Xbox controllers to work with the menu screen and created the intro with our group name to the menu, which allows for the menu music to play for longer.

All three members also took the time to record some voice lines for the dying kamikaze pilots, we ended up having a total of 14 voice clips that would play randomly and occasionally when an enemy dies. These vocal clips tended to involve swearing which in game would be bleeped out, as well some English- Japanese as well as Shien added some joke Japanese quotes.

Roman also added a little pop up image that would randomly appear when an enemy died, he had place holders until I had finished drawing the pilots for them.

Above are the two images for the pilots that I had created. Since we were going for a WW2 feeling to the game and had kamikaze planes I tried to go for a cartoon or anime sort of style for the pilot images while trying to stay true to the factual Japanese pilot uniforms. Shien suggested I make them look for scared/upset so I added the sweat drops, snot, the stress lines around the eyes, tears and the dark cool colours around the top of the face. These traits are commonly used in anime to depict sad and scared emotions.

As well as all of these, Roman ended up getting the scoring system working, even having the highest score shown at the top of the main menu screen, he also added bonus points. The bonus points show up in bright colours to differentiate with the rest of the game scene. When the player takes damage there is camera shake to give feedback to the player that one of the carriers has been hit.

We ended up getting several people in our class to test the game once we were satisfied with everything in it. We also ended up uploading it to Game Jolt as well. Most of the feedback was that the controls were hard to get a hang of at first but ended up getting easier to use the controls as the game went along. Apart from that the feedback generally leaned to be pretty positive.

Overall I believe we're all happy with what we managed to create and how quickly we were able to create it. I myself, am very happy with the game we have created, while it isn't the type of game I generally would play I could see myself playing it with a friend in my spare time.
